Hey Look

Thoughts from someone excited about most things. I started StyleSeat where I spend most of my time. Check out my bio if you're curious or pull up a chair and hang out for a while. You can also make my day by dropping me a line @melodymcc. Seriously. Do it.

Things I’m looking forward to in 2011

I’m feeling good about this year! I think a lot of folks had a tough 2010, many had job changes, financial challenges and generally it was a stressful year.

At the end of things though, I feel like most of my friends/family did impressive things in 2010- my parents moved from the burbs to San Francisco (huge), many friends started companies and Dan and I bootstrapped our business for most of the year. After all of the insanity, I think people are set to totally kill it this year and I’m really really excited about what we’re going to accomplish in 2011.

I’m not a big resolution person. Sharing this stuff publicly has never been a thing of mine, but this is the first step of trying that out too. So in the spirit of kicking things off right, I made a list of things I’m really excited about accomplishing this year.

Things I’m looking forward to in 2011

  • Launching StyleSeat! We’re hiring, growing quickly, moving into our office, building a passionate group of users and creating a stronger product every day. We have a ton of announcements coming very soon. For us 2010 was a lot of building, at 2011 will be about launch and growing our small-yet mighty community to even more awesomeness. I’m chomping at the bit about finally getting out there and showing people what I’ve put my heart into for the past year, this is by far #1.
  • Cleaning House: 2010 was a year where I spent all of my savings, credit and time into building a company. I’m thrilled to be where I am, but as we gear up for the next stage in the business it’s time to gear up personally as well. Paying off debt and spending time cultivating my personal life will be a big focus. I don’t have a kitchen table for example (for a person who loves to cook, this is tough). So I will be getting my Martha Stewart on in a few different areas of my life to have a more solid center, which is also good for the company.
  • Building a Team: the 85 hour work weeks are necessary but aren’t sustainable or smart in the long term. Now that we’re entering the next stage of our business my role will evolve from “doing everything” to “hiring and helping smarter-people do it better”. I’m very excited about this, mostly because my team is kick ass and PUMPED to make things happen. I’m excited to add members to our StyleMafia.
  • Getting Better at Sharing: The past year I’ve had some crazy experiences. Every single day I’ve learned a TON, built a group of uber passionate StyleSeaters and grown a lot as a CEO. I haven’t written a single one of these experiences down. LAME. The main reason is because I’ve been in keep-the-wheels on, let’s build this shit mode. The result of that however is that I haven’t been sharing the epic experiences that the company and our users have gone through together. That’s going to change and I’m pretty excited about that too.
  • Find (more) Balance: I love working all the time and I always will, but finding balance has always been a challenge. This year I’d like to pick up a hobby or two (maybe take a language class), get to the gym more often and spend more time with good friends. I’d also like to add art to my life. Museums! Concerts! Speaking French! Fashion! Need to get into that again too.

Et voila. What are you excited about getting into or making better this year?
